When walking a beach, I watch for interesting pieces of driftwood to see what sea monster shapes I can envision in the wood, but some times the creature looking thing is rather small like this little green monster.

Since it was above freezing today, I was out leveling some gravel on my driveway but the rock size I was moving was definitely smaller than the rocks on this Lake Michigan beach.

The wind was lighter today than the past few days so the waves have lessen on Lake Superior but the forecast has stronger gusts again on Sunday which will likely bring back the Gales of November.

It was a great day to spend a Sunday afternoon at a beach, with temperatures in the upper 80s, picking up pretty rocks and wading in the waves. Today might be the last near 90 degree day for the rest of the year as the week’s forecast is calling for highs in the 60s instead.

This sandpiper did not like to gets its feet wet and stayed away from the waves until it needed a drink after finding stuff to eat along the beach.

Fishing is one of the outdoor activities some people will be enjoying this holiday weekend, especially on a nice early autumn day. While a lot of Lake Superior fishing is done from boats, there is some fishing from shore too.

This waterfront used to be the lumber port of Newport. In 1881, a large wooden pier was built and a small town grow up around it and for the 40 years sailing vessels and barges hauled lumber from the nearby forest. When the forest thinned, the town disappeared with very little evidence of its existence.
The area is now Newport State Park with 11 miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline and is a special dark in that it received the International Dark Sky Park designation – the 49th in the world. A place to view the stars and meteor showers in the absence of artificial light.
