By the afternoon, white snow pellets were falling from the sky and by night, a light coating was covering my cement. I rather see white foam from a waterfall instead, especially when the mist causes a mini rainbow patch to appear also.

Today the creeks and ditches were filling with water from the melting snow since the temperatures reached the mid fifties. I spotted a kingfisher sitting on the wire above the running water and on a bridge, a young boy was watching the overflowing creek as water draws critters and kids.

Walking on the melting snow is rather tricky since it is very slippery much like these rocks along a river when they are wet. It is easier to hike on them on a dry sunny day.

The sunny fall day was nice for outside activities but with the temperature just barely making 60, it might have been too chilly to wade in the fast moving water below the falls.

Yesterday, the end of January was greeted with an above freezing temperature, so there was some snow melting off the roofs and compacting the blanket of snow. My pond had a new layer of water on top of the old ice from the melting but there wasn’t enough melting to cause it to overflow and no rushing water like the Eau Claire River flowing over Big Falls in the late summer, especially since it dropped to below freezing over night. But this morning, the fog from the melting snow covered the trees in a pretty frost again.

After seeing the waterfalls along the Lake Superior shore, ‘Big Falls’ on the Eau Claire River doesn’t seem so impressive in height but it makes a lot of noise with the volume of water falling and if you only have a little pond in your backyard, any waterfall is ‘big’.
