The year-around birds get overlooked in the spring when the other birds return, but the warm weather has the cardinals singing more.

This cardinal wasn’t happy during the snow storm as the limb broke that I had the bird feeders tied to and not too much of the feeder was sticking out of the snow. He was able to get some seeds after the squirrels dug some of the snow away.

This poor cardinal was hiding on the backside of the bird feeder to get out the wind and to try to get some seed which wasn’t buried from the falling snow.

With the blizzard conditions today, the birds had to sneak to the feeders when wind gusts weren’t as strong so they could find the feeders in the blowing snow.

With temperatures above freezing and the sun out, I wasn’t the only one enjoying the day as there was a cardinal singing loudly in a tree this morning. I’m not sure if all the singing was for the weather or if there was love in the air.

There were people do Black Friday shopping today, and the birds were doing black shopping too, or more like gathering black sunflower seeds in between snow storms.

It felt more like winter than spring today and I bet the returning birds were wondering why they came back. Although the spring birds were not singing very much, some of the winter birds were, like the cardinals who seemed to enjoy the cold sunshine.

I normally consider the Northern Cardinal as a winter bird, even though they hang around all year, but the red color of the males stand out against the winter’s white snow. The cardinals are coming to the feeders more right now even though they feed their young mainly insects so I figure they are eating more seeds for themselves as they give the bugs to the babies.

The air is filled with sounds of singing birds, especially the males trying to get noticed by the females. The cardinals are around all winter but his voice is heard above all the returning birds as he sits way up in the trees.
