In the summer, there was leaves on the trees and there were people visiting the Holy Hill Basilica, but on this spring Sunday the trees bare and the shrine ground are empty to slow the spread of the Coronavirus.

Set on Summit Hill overlooking the city of Saint Paul, the Cathedral of Saint Paul (the fourth building to bear that name) stands 306.5 feet tall and is 307 feet long and 216 feet wide. The body of the church is made from granite stone from the state and the cornerstone was laid in 1907. The exterior was completed in 1914 but the main interior work was not completed until 1941.

Yesterday I visited the Basilica of Saint Mary and the Cathedral of Saint Paul and with so much to see, you might forget to look up. This is the interior side of the cathedral’s dome, which is 96 feet in diameter and 175 feet high. There are 24 stained glass windows of the angelic choirs and a eight-pointed chandelier to light the dome.

This past Thursday, the Cathedral of Christ the King in Superior, Wisconsin, was filled with people to witness the ordination of the new bishop. The Most Rev. James P. Powers was ordained as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Superior.
