The sunny day was enjoyed by the birds and critters, especially by my little chipmunks, who seemed to be everywhere in the woods and in my yard and even sneaking into my garage. But those “cute” chipmunks haven’t found any flowers on my porch to dig up as I might not waste the effort trying to keep the flowers in a pot when they are so determined to unearth them.

When I stepped outside this morning, I could see my breath in the cold air but the cardinals were singing loudly in the morning sun. And the chipmunks were racing around too so the critters think it is spring even if the weather doesn’t feel like it yet.

Yesterday on the warm start of March, I heard the first chipmunk. I didn’t spot one today so maybe after it checked out the weather yesterday and saw all the snow still thick on the ground, he decided to hibernate for a few more weeks.

A Chipmunk Returns

The chipmunk should try to hide from me as I wasn’t too happy that it took four days to herd the little rodent out of my garage. And that was after he knocked several things over as it roamed around in off limits territory.

The return of winter has the critters hunting harder for food again so the squirrels and chipmunks are raiding my bird feeders more than normal besides more birds.

The chipmunks have returned from their winter burrow, or at least one has dug two feet up through the snow to eat seeds under the bird feeder. And my cat probably wishes the screen wasn’t separating them but the cat did have watching the little rodent. But the chipmunk probably got cold feet standing on the snow since it wasn’t enjoying a nice summer day like this chipmunk.

Return of the Chipmunk

The chipmunks were absent last week in the cold temperatures but today one was stuffing its cheeks with my birdseed and I imagine it is carrying the seeds to its winter den so I expect a lot more will be carried off by my sweet little critters.

Seed Thief 

Today is All Saints Day, but my little chipmunks are definitely not saints especially after I finished patching the holes in the insulation in the garage from one which got trapped inside over night and tried to dig its way out. They also must be digging out more winter dens as new dirt is being piled high at the hole entrances the last few days. I found a lot of bitternuts they buried in my pots as I cleaned out the flowers at the end of the season.

It was nice that the sun was out today and above 40 degrees and even this chipmunk came out of the birdhouse to sunbathe on the roof. I’m not sure which critter will finally end up with the birdhouse as a chickadee tried to go into the house but the chipmunk raced inside ahead of the bird.
