More critters seemed to be enjoying the sunny, warmer days as a dozen deer were digging through the snow for grass on the far side of the field. This evening some of them came down my driveway as they headed back into the woods for the night.

When I was pulling into my driveway this evening, a fawn was across the road in the soybean field. He jumped back into my woods before I spotted his mother in the soybeans also, so they both were probably getting a snack before bedtime.

This evening I spotted the twin fawns again, like I have different times this month, but they weren’t looking towards their mom or me, so not sure what else was in the woods that captured their attention.

The deer have been playing in my yard, leaving a lot of trails through the snow so I can tell they came up to look in my basement door (probably trying to get out of the cold). And they weren’t too happy when I went outside one night to look at the moon and disturbed their sleeping. Maybe I should charge them a recreational and camping fee.

During the summer, deer wander slowly away from my lawn mower and they don’t feel too threatened but tomorrow they better watch out for people dressed in orange who will be hunting them with guns.

I have been seeing a lot of deer tracks in the muddy soil, even some tiny ones, although I haven’t spotted any fawns yet this spring. I did startle a doe the other day as we both were surprised with the encountered but she bounded off a lot faster than I could.

The deep snow depth this winter was hard on the critters trying to forage for grass so the deer were grazing a lot on my pine trees but hopefully now that some ground is exposed they can find something better to eat.

Six months can make a big difference. In June, the grass was green with trees that were full of leaves and the whitetail deer males still had velvet on their antlers. Now on this cold day, the trees are bare with snow on the ground and the woods are fill with hunters trying to shoot the deer which calmly stood in my yard earlier in the year.
The Hunt is On
I found tiny hoof prints in my pile of new dirt so I think the culprits playing king of the hill were these two twin fawns who have been wandering through my yard different days in the past few weeks.

Early this morning, a doe and her two fawns wandered around my lawn, checking out various things as well as looking in the basement door. They nibbled on green plants and this fawn even ate a flower but didn’t seem like it enjoyed the flavor or texture of the blossom.
