The boat rides to the Apostle Islands would have been a pleasurable trip with the nice summer weather this weekend. Devils Island has sea caves and a lighthouse that was built in 1898, although the lens didn’t arrive until three years later. The plain cylinder tower was exposed to high winds that caused the tower to shake badly which sometimes extinguished the lamp. The structure was reinforced with external braces in 1914 to alleviating the motion problem.

The holiday day started out cloudy and windy but people were still lined up for boat cruises to celebrate the day and the un-official end of summer. A lighthouse and sea caves are big attractions of Devils Island of the Apostle Islands of northern Wisconsin.
Cruising Past Devils Island
The wind was blowing a little stronger today which can cause a surf on lakes and those waves can carve out sea caves in the softer sandstone bedrock. Waves can thunder and boom in the sea caves when the surf is heavy and the Ojibwe tribe interpreted this noise as the sound of evil spirits and may be how Devil’s Island received it name.

I wonder if there will be some big waves hitting Devils Island and carving out more of the sea caves if 30 mph wind gusts are predicted for today. In the winter, the sea caves turn into ice caves, and both views provide an unique experience of the sandstone caves and arches.
