The cloudy day brought several brief rain showers and even some sunshine while it was raining.

It was a great day to spend a Sunday afternoon at a beach, with temperatures in the upper 80s, picking up pretty rocks and wading in the waves. Today might be the last near 90 degree day for the rest of the year as the week’s forecast is calling for highs in the 60s instead.

Fishing is one of the outdoor activities some people will be enjoying this holiday weekend, especially on a nice early autumn day. While a lot of Lake Superior fishing is done from boats, there is some fishing from shore too.

While the dogs were enjoying the water while playing fetch, I waded into the water looking for that perfect “pretty” rock. The rocks look more colorful when wet but sometimes when I reached into the water for a rock, a wave moved it before I could grab it. And the rock may never been seen again by me.

After a windy storm, the waters around sandy bottoms often turn a brown color from all the sediment stirred up.

There is a different type of white on the shore of this beach during the winter and temperatures are lower than summer. But the temperature today, just at freezing, will be 50 degrees warmer if the predicted -20 happens this weekend.

The sunshine helped melt most of the remaining snow even if the temperature only reached 35 today. This looks like an interesting place on the shore of Lake Superior for a picnic spot once I figure out how to navigate the ravine just before this point.

In early October, a Sunday drive would have nice views of autumn colors but this Sunday the extremely windy night and morning has stripped most of the leaves off, even the tough oak leaves. This road would be a great sledding hill in the winter with the series of knolls plunging downward to the next one until it reaches the level of Lake Superior.

The morning sky looked rather eerie when it was sleeting as it had a weird color to it before the ice switched back over to snow. I don’t like looking at winter when it should be autumn yet and the white I want to see are whitecaps and bleached driftwood on a Lake Superior beach.
