I must have a deer that is attracted to yellow since earlier this spring, I had lost a yellow daffodil. It wasn’t eaten, just beheaded instead. And now my yellow and maroon irises are being eaten – which is the first time I have noticed that they have bothered with irises.
Missing Irises
Among the rainy days, hints of late spring and early summer are still trying to emerge from the gray and display some color in the yard.
Splash of Color
This North American native Iris is common is common in sedge meadows, marshes, and along stream banks and shores, so the Blueflag probably liked the last few rainy days, but it was hard for me to get a picture during the rain before the fleeting blossom disappeared. And when the sun came out, the wind was blowing the flower around and made it hard to stay in the frame.

This week the irises have opened up, displaying a range of colors with blues, purples, yellow and even these maroon and yellow ones.

The new snow this morning was a reminder that winter has its hold on the land and it will be five months before the irises bloom again.

Normally you see flowers from the outside and not down inside a blossom like a bee would see as they gather nectar.

The flowers were late blooming this year with the extremely long winter and now that they are blooming, it is hard to enjoy them because of the rainy days but at least they are dry this morning. The birds and critters probably are enjoying a break from the rain too as much as I am.

The rain interrupted my mowing but it does water the plants and flowers, as well as leave rain drops on the flowers which sparkle when the sun appears the next morning like on this iris.

Irises are not like winter since they do not last long. Open one day and gone the next and a long wait until next year’s bloom.
