Another “Throwback Thursday” image is an old wooden barn, as new wooden barns are rare since they have been replaced by metal buildings instead. This barn, which was my grandfather’s, has seen more than a hundred years. It has heard the laughter of children playing in the hayloft, the grunts of farmers stacking hay and the moos and meows of cows and cats sheltered inside.

When traveling around the countryside, you often see similar barns in an area either in the foundation or shape or style. And a few miles away, another pocket of barn style will appear, including this style of having the extra pattern at the ends of the barn. The upper half does stand out farther than the lower boards so I don’t know if they just lapped the upper boards or if they are thicker boards on the top half. Most of the barn in this style have the half moon window at the peak and the other other windows but some have a more flowing curve pattern to make then different from their neighbors. Sometimes you don’t notice the extra pattern when the barn wall is painted the same color instead of the two-tone pattern.

There are more signs summer is coming to an end with the chill in the air and fall colors being to show more. Autumn is a pretty time of the year but it fades to quickly and the long winter is around the corner.

I wonder what the P stands for on the barn. Was it the first letter of the farmer’s last name or farm name? I wonder if it stood for Peterson like my great, great grandfather’s name.

I do love old wooden barns with their rustic look to them but while I was making a barn board frame yesterday, I couldn’t but think how nice and weathered the boards on this barn are which would make some wonderful frames. But other than some cracks in the foundations, this barn might be around for a little while longer so I guess I have to put my hammer and crowbar away for a bit yet.

This barn might be old and not used anymore but the roof looks good to provide some dry places for the critters outside which are probably tired of getting snowed and rained on for the past week.

It would be interesting to peek into this barn to see if there is a silo inside the barn and if it was a square one or why this particular design on the end of the barn. It must have had a purpose, one that I might never know, but I do know it is an interesting barn.

The new year is just around the corner and the “old” year has just about completed its journey. For some, the past year was a difficult one with the forces of nature destroying homes and lives. This barn weathered nature for years but in the end, it lost the battle and will no longer be able to stand tall in the coming year and soon all its former existence will fade from the landscape.
