Some might dream of a white Christmas, but they probably wouldn’t put their presents under a tree which has its branches covered with lots of heavy snow as it might be a bit chilly to dig them out.
White Christmas
Back in the olden days, when school let out for the Christmas break, one of the tasks I had with my siblings was to cut the Christmas tree. But it had to be a “special” pick and not in the good way. We had planted pine trees for a windbreak and the ones we were allowed to cut were ones crowding out another tree so normally they were flat on one side or something else wrong with it. But the flat sided Charlie Brown tree worked well tight against the wall. Every year though, the tree seemed to grow five feet from the time we cut it until we got it in the house! This tree would have fit in with the Charlie Brown tree theme without a center leader to mount the star on, but would work if you couldn’t decide on an angel or star for the top and wanted both, if only you could figure out how to attach them to the twin side branches.
Charlie Brown Christmas Tree
This year, the last snow drift melted on Monday but snow can still come in May as it did five years ago when it dumped 18 inches of snow on my yard from the storm that lasted May 1 through the 3rd. The storm caused schools to cancel classes and the weight of the heavy snow snapped a lot of branches. This normally mighty pine tree looked very limp and wimpy as the limbs hung down under the wet snow.
Five Years Ago
The outdoors was filled with the sounds of snowmobiles racing across the new snow. I imagine there was some skiing and snowshoeing happening in the sunshine. And there was also a lot of shoveling too making me feeling a bit weary from multiple snow storms and even this tree seems weakened under the weight of more snow.
Weary of Winter
The morning’s light revealed another new coating of snow, which hid the ice underneath and made it treacherous for man and machine. My snowblower hit a patch of that hidden ice and slid the front tire off the driveway and all of my pushing and cat litter couldn’t get it out so I had to use my car to pull it out. The snow might be pretty until it turns against me!
