Lake Superior has some calm days with not much of a ripple on the water surface and I was able to sit on rocks that are normally wet.

My walk on the beach today had a different feel because most of the sand was frozen and I barely left a shoe print as I walked along until I got to where the waves were coming in. Plus I wasn’t able to pick up some of the pretty rocks since they too were frozen to the ground. With the warmer waves today, the snow and ice pack melted back but snow will eventually cover the beach again for the winter.

Although it didn’t quite reach 70 degrees along the shore of Lake Superior today, the wind was lighter so serious rock hunters could wander out into the water looking for the perfect agate.

It was a good thing these birds have headed south for the winter already because otherwise there would have been a lot of aborted landings with the very strong wind gusts overnight and during this morning.

With the day starting below freezing, the beaches might be empty of people but there was evidence of some living things out and about by the tracks on the sand.

Once in a while when reaching for that odd shape or old patterned rock, it turns out not to be a rock at all. This little turtle was caught in the waves and it took it a while to get past the water and rocks before finally making its way towards shore across the sandy beach.

While the dogs were enjoying the water while playing fetch, I waded into the water looking for that perfect “pretty” rock. The rocks look more colorful when wet but sometimes when I reached into the water for a rock, a wave moved it before I could grab it. And the rock may never been seen again by me.

These stone petals might be too heavy to blow away like many tree leaves did today, but this “flower” didn’t survive the bigger waves.

On a rocky beach, some times I see stacks of little rocks but this stack of balanced rocks were bigger ones that I wouldn’t have wanted to lift and hope it doesn’t fall on anyone’s toes. To me, it looks like the Disney’s robot WALL-E character.
