The different varieties of spring wildflowers are continue to appear after a late start. The wild geranium, which has other names including cranesbill, are displaying their rose-pink-lavender colors in the woods and road ditches. The name cranesbill comes from after the plant is done blooming and the fruit capsule with five basal cells and a long central beak-like column like a crane’s head.

Patches of pink now line some of the road ditches and woodlands as the wild geraniums are in full bloom. Native to eastern North America, wild geranium is also known by these common names including wood geranium, alum root, alum bloom, cranesbill, spotted cranesbill, wild cranesbill, and spotted geranium.

The flower spring season seems to be compressed as flower varieties opened a few days ago are already done for the season instead of lasting longer. I spotted the first wild geranium open today, but hopefully these will last longer than the other spring wildflowers.

There was a break in the clouds this afternoon, but the sun had a hard time filtering down to the carpet of pink and green. The wild geranium is a native woodland flower and is also seen in road ditches as they grow well in full sun as well as light shade.

I spotted a lonely wild geranium open today. I always think of them as a summer flower but since the longest day of the year is about a month away, I guess it is more summer than spring anymore even if the calendar doesn’t say so yet. The wild geranium, also called spotted geranium or wood geranium, is native to eastern North America.

The chilly, cloud day didn’t seem to spring like but I spotted a lonely Wild Geranium blooming in the ditch. So maybe after a sunny weekend, more blossoms will open up and fill the area with pink color.

The some of the road ditches right now are filled with pink color from the native Wild Geranium which are attracting honeybees and bumblebees to the blossoms. The native plant is easily cultivated and can be grown as an ornamental plant in gardens.

With temperatures near freezing overnight, the spring flowers might be a little frosty. The pinky purple of the Wild Geraniums look like their cheeks are already turning rosy from the cold temperatures, but at least they not buried under snow yet although snow is falling at the moment.

As I was finishing mowing when the sun was setting, the pink blossoms of the Wild Geranium in the ditch were catching the last rays of the sun before it slipped away for the night.
