Sometimes you have to look deeper to see a hidden gem. When admiring the colorful trees along the roadside, a small opening in the brush and trees gave a glance of something hidden and you just need to take the time to backup and investigate a little more. Finding the one small opening, nestled against a colorful slope, a farmstead across the valley floor could be seen by zooming in.

Course since I am short, I was grateful that my camera view finder would tip down so I could shoot over my head. That is much easier and safer than setting up a step ladder in the middle of the road to take the picture!

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.

The idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as ‘Flag Birthday’. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as ‘Flag Birthday’, or ‘Flag Day’.

You can spot flags in various places but it isn’t often you see a flag pattern on a barn roof. All I know is that I would not want to have been one of the workers shingling the roof as I probably would have messed up the pattern and it would have been a mess instead of a flag.

This barn seems a bit sad. Maybe it is sad because there is still snow this late into April. Or maybe it is sad because it is remembering ANZAC day, a day celebrated day remembering the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. ANZAC Day’s motto is ‘Lest We Forget’.

So let us remember all veterans worldwide, especially the veterans in Australian and New Zealand on their celebration day, but also all the other sacrifices made by policemen, fireman, farmers and others that protect us, provide services and goods that allow us to enjoy our existence in this world.

They often talk about things on the threatened list of being extinct, and around here wooden barns would be on the endangered list as they are coming rarer and rarer to find as they are being replaced by the metal pole barns instead.

The wooden barns have a different feel to them, a warmer feel, but also they normally contained several functional areas; area to milk the cows, stable for the horses, hayloft to store the hay, a granary, and area to store equipment.

But times have changed, methods have changed, and existence of the small farmers having a variety of animals to feed his family have vanished but every once in a while you stumble across an old wooden barn and you catch a glimpse of history and you wonder what memories it holds.
